Several nations have halted funding to UNRWA.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee held the first of hearings this week to investigate the work of UNRWA and the participation of some of its staff in the brutal attacks on Israel. Committee member Representative Scott Perry of Pennsylvania said, “The United Nations Relief Workers Agency is a terrorist-supporting entity, ladies and gentlemen. America’s taxpayers pay for the absolute worst of it, the absolute worst of it.”
Shortly after statehood was granted to Israel in 1949, the United Nations established its Relief and Works Agency for Palestinian Refugees in the Middle East. With funding from the United Nations, its purpose was to provide humanitarian relief and social services for people of the region.
Earlier this week, the Israeli intelligence agency shared information containing allegations against employees of the UN agency who participated with Hamas in their October 7 terror attack.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the evidence of UNRWA involvement is “highly, highly credible.”
The United States and some other Western nations, along with Japan, have frozen funds intended for the UN agency. With the majority of its budget placed in doubt, the agency, which has some 13,000 people working in Gaza, may be forced to halt all operations if funding is not restored.
